Following the incised numbers
Oh Se-Yeol scratches numbers into layers of paint. Follow a single digit and you can see both the shape of the mark and the colour just beneath the surface.

Colour in an everyday scene
Moon Hyeong-Tae paints people and objects from everyday life with distorted forms and dense colour. Follow the colour that catches your eye first and see how it changes the mood of the scene.

The white beside a charcoal line
In the Black Neon series, dark charcoal lines meet yellow on a white ground. After tracing the outlines, look at the shapes formed by the untouched spaces between them.

Holding a gaze
Children in Nara’s paintings may meet your gaze or close their eyes. Notice how the angle of an eyelid or the line of a mouth can change your sense of distance from the figure.

A balloon in polished steel
In Balloon Dog, creases at the joints recall the twist of a real balloon. The polished stainless steel also reflects the viewer, bringing a childhood object and the room around it into the same image.

The shadow on the wall
Gerstein layers painted metal cutouts. Imagine looking at one of his groups of cyclists from the side. The gaps between layers and the shadows on the wall become part of the composition.

A word as an image
In LOVE, a tilted O interrupts a square of four letters. Read the word once, then look at the spaces between the letters. A small tilt sets the whole composition in motion.

Gallery Taeil is a space for Korean and international contemporary art in Cheongdam, Seoul. A colour that catches the eye, a brushstroke that comes into view up close — these are places to begin a conversation.
